Sophdoesnails palette review!
I know that I'm literally so far behind with first impressions on this palette but honestly every time I thought of buying it I talked myself out of it. £10 is super reasonable, but Revolution palettes I've bought in the past have been quite hit and miss and not necessarily the best quality. Also, looking at this palette and the looks people were making with it, I struggled to see it as a palette I would use often, because I'm a bit of a palette junkie my aim has been to cut down the amount of palettes I'm buying and not really touching.
However, I received a Love2Shop gift card for Christmas and decided to do a little drugstore haul in Superdrug and literally couldn't keep making excuses not to buy and try this palette (since it is absolutely stunning).
I've heard a very mixed bag of reviews regarding this palette, not helped by the review/tutorial Soph does herself on YouTube. In the tutorial she seems undecided as to the look she's going for and changes her mind a few times during the video, this causes anyone following the video I become confused and I imagine anyone less talented than Soph herself would end up making a mess.
So now that's over, let's get into it!
Packaging and Pricing
The packaging of the palette is stunning! The outer sleeve has a beautiful pink and gold pattern with gold holo style writing on it.
The actual palette itself is a beautiful 'millennial pink' colour, which is very much in season right now. Again the 'Soph x' signature is done up in a holographic style, rose gold coloured and it ties in really well with the pink colour as a setting.
There is a sizeable mirror on the inside which I honestly think is such an essential component for an eyeshadow palette.
The Shadows
Down to the important stuff, the actual eye shadows themselves. The palette is made up of a mix of warm brown and coral type tones, jewel tone shimmers and cool browns. There is also a black and a white shade.
For me the shades that stick out are the jewel tone shimmers. The bright pops of purple, green and gold in the very centre of the palette really draw in your eye.
Upon first swatch, the texture of the shadows is very dry and almost chalky. When I first swatched onto my hand, they came out patchy and it was my initial observation that they would be hard to blend. This observation was proved to me when I first tried using them to create a look. Chalky, lots of fallout and very difficult to blend.
The mattes are not very pigmented at all, which actually is very common amongst these types of mixed palettes.
The shimmers are beautiful when you use on a brush that has been wet with setting spray. But when used as a standalone they don't perform quite as well as you may hope.
Overall Opinion
For me, this is an average palette. The mattes don't perform, the shimmers take some work and the fallout can be off-putting. I can't say it's not worth £10 because that's ridiculously cheap even if all I use it for is a nice pop of shimmer every once in a while. Not a bad little palette, but with the recent eyeshadow releases from Makeup Revolution being outstanding, I had slightly higher hopes that it just didn't live up to.
